My Week at Salmon Youth Centre

13/05/2025

My name is Martin, And I’m a student of the City of London academy (COLA) Southwark, and I've done my working experience at the Salmon Youth Centre for one week from the 6th of May to the 9th of May.

Ive choosen to work here because it’s close to my home. I also always pass by it when I go for a walk, go shopping, or go out with friends. Looking at it from the outside, it always seemed like a nice place with incredible amenities, like the rock-climbing wall that can be seen from the street. However, I’d never been inside because I didn’t know how to register or just because I didn’t had enough time.

Working here has been a rewarding experience. I’ve met a lot of very nice people and learned new things. I think what I liked most about my work experience at the Salmon Youth Center is that the atmosphere throughout the space is very pleasant and wholesome. It feels like a family of people who care about each other.

Since I started working I have been assigned different tasks, some simpler than others, such as every morning we organize, clean and tidy the entire space so that it is ready for the full day’s activities. I have also been assigned more complex tasks such as supervising the inflatable trampoline to ensure that all the young people remained safe. I have also done more interactive tasks with the young people, such as teaching them the best football shooting techniques with the aim of all the young people being able to score goals into the top corner of the goal, obviously while having fun and enjoying with their friends. Finally, I have also been assigned what in my opinion is the most important task of all, and this is to make sure that everyone is having a great time, and try to motivate more young people to take part in the many interactive activities available at the youth center.

Working here I have overcome many challenges that have come my way. I would say that the most difficult thing about working here is being able to keep the youngest members under control to ensure that all activities are carried out in the safest way possible, since it can often be difficult for young people to follow directions or pay attention. However, I think that I have been able to perform very well in my work and that I have been able to achieve and overcome these difficulties. On the other hand, I have also been able to improve many of my skills, such as communication with other people and the ability to make myself better understood.

Ultimately, working here has been an incredible experience, and I’ve had a great time. I’d like to thank my colleagues who have always supported me whenever I’ve needed it. After my work experience here, I’m very happy and grateful to everyone. Thank you very much for the opportunity.
