Frankie’s two weeks work experience at Salmon
10/07/2017
At Salmon, we welcome any young person who wants do work experience with us so they can gain insight on what it is like in a working environment and build new skills that they can take with them for the rest of their lives.
Frankie was one of four young people who did their work experience with us and has enjoyed every minute of planning and running sessions with the Salmon staff. Have a read of his experience below:
My name is Frankie McHugh and I have been doing work experience here at Salmon Youth Centre for two weeks and have taken part in loads of different activities with different age groups such as 6-9s and 10-13s.
In my first week of work experience I have done a lot of different jobs such as helping out running 10-13s Girls and Mixed Clubs, Salmon Tigers and 10-13s Football and Trampoline clubs. I have learnt the importance of engaging and encouraging young people in activities and enjoying what you’re doing too. I really enjoyed helping run the 10-13s football club because I was a manager of the yellows and found out the games are exciting and competitive, considering that I used to come to the club when I was younger.
In my second week, I helped Jide in climbing club and I learned how to belay 6-9 year olds up the climbing wall. It was a good experience for me because I have never done this before and it was something new to me. Furthermore I helped supervise during trampoline sessions and taught some of the young people routines during girls club, as well as lead games and activities in other clubs.
Overall my work experience here at Salmon Youth Centre was great! I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and would recommend young people if there haven’t already come along to see what it’s like, take part in the activities and enjoy themselves.
