Dan Earns England Basketball U17 Call-Up

04/07/2025

From humble beginnings at the Salmon Centre to representing England at the national level, 17-year-old Dan has received a well-deserved call-up to the England U17 Basketball Team. His journey is a powerful example of what hard work, consistency, and community support can achieve.

Dan’s relationship with basketball began at Salmon when he was just 7 years old. Although his visits paused for several years, it was in Year 9 at age 14 that everything changed. Invited back by his cousin, Dan joined the Friday night basketball sessions (7–9 PM) and began a committed routine of improving his game.

“I was going every Friday, working to improve my skills and stay consistent. That’s when the hard work really started,”Dan shared.

Facing older and more experienced players – some as old as 19 – Dan embraced the challenge. Rather than being discouraged, he saw it as an opportunity to sharpen his game and test his limits.

“Playing against 17, 18, 19-year-olds helped me grow. It was my chance to prove myself and learn fast.”

Behind the scenes, key mentors at Salmon Centre played vital roles in Dan’s development. Volunteer Coach Christian pushed Dan to his limits, strengthening him mentally and physically. His training took another step forward in Year 10, when he started working with Coach Ish, who helped refine his shooting mechanics through targeted drills and weekly reps.

“Christian toughened me up. Ish really helped me become a better shooter. They made sure I pushed myself every single week.”

By Year 12, Dan’s growth continued with support from Salmon volunteer Bonsu.  Bonsu became a reliable training partner – helping rebound, run drills, and push Dan through challenging sessions.

“Even though Bonsu didn’t know much about basketball, he supported me every week. He ran drills with me, rebounded, and made sure I stayed on track.”

That discipline and dedication paid off: Dan has now earned a spot on the England U17 National Team, a dream come true and a huge achievement that reflects both his talent and the powerful community behind him.

“I want to give a huge thank you to Salmon Centre and everyone who’s helped me get this far – and who will keep helping me improve. I wouldn’t be here without you.”

As Dan gears up to represent his country, his journey stands as a testament to the importance of local programs, dedicated mentors, and the power of showing up – week after week.
